hi, friends. it's been a while. tonight I fixed the café so it actually loads. 🎉

also added a little chat box, in case you want to talk to people hanging out 😊

we'll probably never reach that dream of a user-programmable social space. but it is a constant inspiration

i think @tildetown is the ultimate open web, community-run social network of the future

that is, until this is all built and then included in @writefreely, so anyone can create and run their own hangout spot, with its own norms, governance, etc.

it's all working toward independence for creators, plus small, self-governing communities.

the idea is:

creators keep their choice of tool, ownership of their data, and independence (including using their own domain name), and

hanging out happens in one convenient hangout spot.

the big question to answer is what makes sense to centralize vs. decentralize.

people "don't want" to visit websites these days; they want a single convenient platform. cool, so that's what this service offers.

but the underlying sources of content and information -- the tools and platforms you use to *create* content can be anything you want.

thinking about how this works with the open web, I imagine your Remark.as profile could plug into other blogging and photo-sharing backends, like @pixelfed or any photo-sharing silos that offer enough open data access

in the fediverse, I'm not sure if this means creating a simple frontend, or if Remark.as implements the client-to-server protocol, and acts as the client 🤔

profiles are still early; I'd like them to showcase both your @write_as posts and @snap_as photos in one place. then of course everyone can comment on photos, too

Remark.as boosted

Maybe you'll be able to comment on @write_as and @snap_as posts here. Would that be cool?

Comments and conversations are coming to @write_as soon! Today, we just rolled out our new landing page: remark.as

Getting a bit closer to making some moves here. We plan to start by allowing email responses to your @write_as newsletters.

Low-tech at first, your responses would go straight to the author via email. But then we can potentially allow you to receive those responses through the Remark.as web app.
